Etsy Update : August 2015

August 23, 2015

Some of you may know that I have an Etsy shop. I’ve talked about it a little bit. It’s a small thing, but I love it. It was the first thing I decided I wanted to do to help maintain what sanity I had left during the start of my PhD. It was the product of a marriage between wanting to have something else in my life other than “thesis teaching thesis teaching teaching writing data writing ladeda procrastibaking looming deadline BLIND PANIC thesis teaching marking teaching thesis thesis blargh” and a desire to be more creative, more regularly. It’s a crafty survival mechanism baby, if you will.

I started making polymer clay items because I had seen a few tutorials and figured I could give it a shot. The necklaces I made were pretty basic to start with but I slowly began to branch out and try different colour combinations. I also made earrings and hair pin sets with fabric-covered buttons, and bobbin necklaces. You might notice I’ve used past tense when describing those items. Well, my beady-eyed little readers, that’s because the birdandfox Etsy shop is going through some changes. My crafty survival mechanism baby is growing up! *sob*

Long story short, I eventually found I had no motivation to make my items. Nada. Zilch. I’d lost my passion. Where it had gone, I do not know. Maybe it’s hiding in Mary Poppin’s big-ass magic carpet bag. Who knows. It had disappeared and left me and I felt like a jilted lover at the alter. (I know I’ve jumped from talking about it as a baby and now a lover. Let’s just gloss over that.) Like any good post-break up story, I spent some time being miserable and feeling a little sorry for myself. But then! I bounced back, baby! Inspiration struck, out of the blue, for no apparent reason. I was trawling the internet and lamenting my lack of creativity with Mr. birdandfox when, suddenly, an idea hit me and I was off! I got the excited butterflies in the tummy, the racing mind, the frantic scrabble to write the ideas down before they leave your head like wisps of smoke.

I’m not going to go into specifics of what’s to come for the Etsy shop just yet, purely because everything is still very much in Ideas Land at the moment. But there will be another Etsy Update coming soon!

Have you ever lost your creative mojo? How did it come back to you?

    1. I can’t wait to see your revamped store Jacqui! Glad you’ve found your creative spark again. I know the feeling, I feel like I’m having a creative crisis every other week.. It’s a tough life being creative, isn’t it? Hehe 🙂

      1. Thanks Catherine! I’m excited for it too! It can be quite tricky, can’t it? Glad to know I’m not the only one! Thanks for commenting 🙂

    1. That’s awesome Jacquie. My creative mojo comes and goes, but I have to say that this year it’s been pretty great…maybe it’s all the free time! Hey do you want anything from Japan for your craft stuff? Like some Japanese fabric or something? Washi paper? Embroidery thread (not super Japanese but there was a lot at this shop I went to and I thought of you)? I’d like to send you something for being such a good photography collaborator and general good egg x

      1. Oh Isabel, you’re such a sweet person! I would love anything you want to send me haha! I ain’t picky! Their fabric and paper patterns are always stunning but I really am not very choosy – you don’t have to send me anything!

I’m glad your creative mojo has been good for you lately 🙂 Your idea for the photo collab is certainly proof of that. Thanks for commenting, Isabel 😀
